The Paul Schadek Sewing Academy, a sewing school in Mikindani Kenya, was created in July 2019 help empower students to learn a trade that helps them support themselves and their families.
Wakio, a single mother and seamstress, is the teacher at the sewing school. She imparts technical knowledge and skills to over 60 students that will empower them long after school ends. Teaching a trade can help students not bound for college, move forward in life.
Students have learned to hand-sew button holes, how to cut out patterns, use machines to sew uniforms for students, and make deras (dresses) and masks.
